Fatal Shooting. Accident.
Alf Chesson Jnr Killed

A fatal shooting accident, which cast a gloom over Day Dawn and Cue, occurred on Sunday afternoon, at about 4.15, near the Cuddingwarra road, some four miles from Cue. The victim was Alfred Chesson, popularly known as "Young Alf," eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Alf. Chesson, of Day Dawn. On Saturday evening Mr. Chesson, Alf. and a younger brother left on a shooting excursion, and camped that night at the "Golden Fleece" pool. They had an enjoyable day amongst the game, and were on their way home with a good bag on Sunday afternoon, when some plovers were seen off the road. The youth desired to have a shot at them and got out of the sulky. He was unsuccessful, but as the birds landed a short distance away, he decided to try again. On this occasion he did not fire the gun, and evidently forgot to unload it. Whilst in the act of getting into the sulky, he was assisting his father and brother to settle the rug so that it could be drawn over their knees, the gun, which was held in the left hand, went off. The charge entered the lad's head above the left ear blowing part of the skull away. Death was instantaneous, The father and brother received a great shock, and it was some moments before they fully realised that Alf. was dead. After covering the body with the rug, Mr. Chesson drove towards Cue, with the intention of notifying the authorities. He met a friend on the way, and it was the latter who brought the sad news into town. Everyone was shocked, and full of sympathy for the youth and his parents.
