Western Argus21 May 1918, page 7 THE LATE MR. J. T.  RUTTLE FUNERAL AT Kanowna, May 13. The funeral of the late Mr J. T. Ruttle who died as the result of an accident, took place at Kanowna. Cemetery on Monday and as might be anticipated his popularity and the. esteem in which the public have. held him, was amply demonstrated by the large attendance. The deceased had been. identified with Kanowna from its earliest days and had ever taken an active interest in its advancement, rendering many valued services in his various positions as town councilor, member and chairman of the Road Board, justice of the peace, 'etc.
These positions he had filled for a great many years with marked intelligence, and at considerable personal sacrifice. He was ever ready and willing in the cause of charity or patriotism to give hearty and, liberal assistance and his untimely end will leave a void in our limited political and social circle. The funeral took place at 3 o'clock, and being under the control of the Masonic body of whom the deceased was a Past Master, started from the Masonic Hall after the performance of the usual ceremonials. The Cortege was unusually imposing.
A double line of Masons in their regalia of office preceded the hearse, marching to the plaintive dirges of pipes played by a brother Mason. Following the hearse, a long column of motor cars and conveyances served to constitute one of the largest funerals Kanowna has witnessed. At the grave, the Rev. A. W. Wellington was very impressive in his deliverance of the funeral service, and the Right Worshipful Bro, E. K. Beaumont conducted the Masonic service. The deceased, who was 66 years of age was buried in the Presbyterian section of the ground, the undertakers being McIver aid Walker, of Kalgoorlie. Among the wreaths sent were those from the following Masonic Lodge 855. Goldfields Motor Club. Mr and Mrs. J L Martin, Mrs. J. Wilmott, Mr. and Mrs, H Martin, Mr. and Mrs, T. J. Willis.

MINING FATALITY AT KANOWNA: Oct. 24. A fatal accident occurred at the Lily Australis mine on Saturday morning. The victim was Richard Thwaites, a widower, about 55 years of age, who was an experienced miner. About 9 a.m. Thwaites and his mate, Henry Thomas, were engaged in timbering between the 8.0 ft. and 900 ft. levels. Thomas felt something brush his cap as it fell from above, and exclaimed, "That was a close shave l" 'his produced no response from Thwaites, and on looking for him Thomas found that he had disappeared from where he had been working. It was soon ascertained that he had been struck by a falling block of mullock, weighing about 2 cwt., and had been knocked down a pass2 a depth of about 80 ft. Thomas hurried down and found Thwaites dead at the bottom of the pass. It is believed that his neck was broken, and that death was instantaneous. An inquest was opened by Mr. Braidwood Evans, J.P., deputy coroner, with a jury consisting of Messrs. C., Bartlett, J. Ro!lo, and J. Irving, and was adjourned till Tuesday. The deceased was employed as a shift boss at the Lily Australis mine four years ago. Two months ago he returned to work at the mine and is spoken of by the manager as a good and experienced miner. He was a native of Ox Hill, near Newcastle. on-Tyne, England. He leaves two sons in England, and two brothers in New South Wales, one of whom is the Mayor of Adamstown. The funeral took place this (Sunday) afternoon and was largely attended. The service at the grave was conducted by the Rev Mr. Lefevre, and the Masonic service was read by J.P.P. Bro. D. Oakley. Members of the Masonic fraternity marched to the cemetery in advance of the hearse.

THE KANOWNA MYSTERY- INQUEST ON HUMAN REMAINS.
This morning at ten o'clock the adjourned inquest will be held regarding the human remains which were recently discovered close to the Government dam, about three and a half miles out of town. Considerable interest is being taken in the inquiry because the discovery has been linked with the alleged finding of the Golden Sickle nugget. Yesterday afternoon a party drove out to the spot where the remains were discovered. It consisted of Warden Troy, the chief magistrate of the district; Mr. H. J. Gray, JP, who will conduct the inquiry;
Corporal Bishop, the officer in charge of the local police station; Constable Wilson, who has been most energetic in endeavouring to unravel the mystery and two Press reporters.After a somewhat rough passage, owing to the roads being cut up by drays passing to and fro, the quarry of sand where the remains were found was duly reached. It is situated a few yards off the Ballagundi road. The party on arrival at the spot proceeded to investigate the matter. Constable Wilson pointed out the spot where the remains had been found.
That was at the foot of a tree, the trunk of which was charred to a height of about 3ft. For several yards around in all directions, there was evidence that a fire had taken place. One glance was sufficient to show that the man could not have been under the tent when it was burned, for where the body was found there was no room for a tent to have been pitched. The rings of the eight holes apparently belonging to the tent had, however, been previously found by Constable Wilson, and the position of the body, together with the general surroundings, points to the conclusion that the man had spread out his tent and was lying on it when his death occurred. How so is a mystery that will perhaps never be solved? Many theories as to the case of death have been advanced, each one of which is as likely to be true as any other.

Kalgoorlie Western Argus 26 November 1907, page 13  WOODLINE FATALITY - TRUCK. LOADER'S DEATH.On Tuesday afternoon an enquiry was opened by the acting coroner, Mr. W. J. Curtis J.P., as to the death of a man who had been killed on the Woodline. Evidence was given by Sergeant Bishop showing that documents found in the effects of the deceased gave his name as Johan Heinrich Andres Wagener, of German birth, and aged 41 years. H. McCombe, the foreman of the truck loaders on the Kanowna wood, line, deposed: I was at the 18-mile siding on the line. My duty is to place out the trucks and men for the different loading places.

That morning I placed the deceased with four trucks. We had to run about half a mile, and then he would cut off his trucks. When I spoke to him, he was standing alongside the line and should have gotten off the trucks while they were standing. The engine was trailing the trucks and travelling about three miles an hour. It was about 15 chains from where I spoke to him that he was killed. I was on the trucks behind those of the deceased. I saw something on the line, and tried to stop my trucks, but was too close to the body to do so, and they ran over it.I immediately signalled the engine to stop and found that it was Harry Wagener who had been run over. The body was lying across one rail on its chest, and the legs were inside the other rail. I covered the body till Police-Constable Brodie arrived and took charge of it. I assisted him in bringing the body to the morgue.I had known the deceased for five years. He was a competent man and had been in charge of trucks on the Kurrawang line. I think it was a pure accident I do not think. the deceased committed suicide.

Kalgoorlie Miner, Thu 6 Sep 1900 Accident 11th July, died in Hospital 5th September. After lingering for two months in the hospital with a broken spine, John Youngman breathed his last early this morning. Since the accident, which practically killed him at the outset, his mates have been unremitting in their care towards him. The deceased was about 43 years of age, and had been in the colony for many years, being one of those on the Kimberley and Murchison rushes. The funeral, which is to take, place to-morrow, is certain to be very largely attended, as Youngman was a general favorite among the miners and the townspeople.
