WASHINGTON George  27 Mar 1895, Murchison Times and Day Dawn Gazette 27 March 1895, page 2

Among other recent victims of typhoid last week was an elderly negro from the United States, familiarly known as George Washington. George was a well known figure at the last Melbourne Centennial Exhibition, where he wore a smart uniform as the aide de camp of Mr. Pickering, the Executive Commissioner of the U.S., America. He amassed a little money and invested it in real estate, but the blighting influence of the land boom fell upon him, and he became a wanderer on the face of the earth. Finally be reached Geraldton and travelled up to Mullewa, where he was literally stranded. He was old and stout and manifestly unfitted for a life on the Goldfields, but he was determined to reach Cue or bust. Poor old George wished to see Mr. W. K. Wilson, upon whose kindness of disposition he relied, but that gentleman had returned before George could reach here. Barney Lamond considerately gave the old man a lift up on his team, and after six months of vicissitudes he quietly passed in his cheque on Thursday, everything possible haying been done to smooth his last hours.
