GUNPOWDER EXPLODES - TERRIBLE AFFAIR AT MEEKATHARRA - TWO BOYS FATALLY INJURED

A tragic affair occurred at Meekatharra on Thursday afternoon, when, as a result of a bag of gunpowder near which they were playing, exploding, three boys were seriously injured, two of whom died later from their injuries in the Meekatharra Hospital. The names of the victims are Leslie Day, aged six years, and Hugh Forrester, aged six years (killed); Barclay Day, aged eleven years (injured). Although only brief particulars are available concerning the tragic event, it is believed that Leslie Day and his brother Barclay, who were in company with the other lad named Forrester, came across a bag of gunpowder in a cutting opposite the railway construction camp, the gunpowder, it is stated, having been placed there by railway men engaged on construction work. Being 'Guy Fawkes Night’ the lads saw an opportunity of utilising a portion of the gunpowder to make a bonfire and the eldest of the boys, Barclay Day, is stated to have taken some of the powder from the bag, and made a trail on the ground, a short distance from the bag.

The younger boys were at the time standing close to the bag, when the elder boy is believed to have set alight to the trail which he had made. The ignition of the trail of powder was followed almost simultaneously by the terrific explosion of the bag of powder, and as a result all three boys received extensive and painful injuries. Although they must have suffered extreme pain from the burning which they received, the lads succeeded in returning unaided to their homes, from where they were immediately conveyed to the local hospital. The younger lads, however, were suffering severely from the burns they had received and also from the shock, and they succumbed to their injuries the same night. Barclay Day, who was less seriously injured than the others, was stated to be in a critical condition, but inquiry this morning elicited the information that he was improved. Hugh Forrester, who was one of the two victims of the tragic happening, is a nephew of Mrs. Sims, of Sanford Geraldton.

Michael DEMPSEY - Death of Murchison Identity.

The death occurred at 1.3O p.m. on Monday of Mr, M. P, Dempsey. The late Mr. Dempsey, who was a native of Ireland, was a pioneer business man of the Murchison. In the early days of Sandstone the deceased was manager of the local brewery and served in that capacity for some time. On leaving Sandstone he made his home at Day Dawn, where be started in business for himself as a draper. In time the prosperity of "the Dawn" waned, and the late Mick "upped sticks and away" to Meekatharra where 17 years ago, he opened the drapery business which was still in his possession at the time of his death. It is understood that tbe late Mr. Dempsey, who was 73 vears of age and a bachelor, has no near relatives living in this State. Apart from his association with the affairs of the Catholic Church he had few interests in public matters. After a short service in the Catholic Church at 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, the funeral proceeded to the cemetry, where the burial 'service was read by the Rev. Father Halpin. Many old friends cf the deceased attended to pay theirlast respects.

DEATH IN OUTBACK - Englishman's Awful End - Story of Thomas Durie

Another report of Constable Meyer, of Meekatharra, to the Commissioner of Police today gave further particulars relating to Thomas Edward Durie (34), the story of whose terrible death 24 miles from Meekatharra on about September a was told in 'The Daily News' yesterday. Investigating a report on September that a man had wandered away from Peak Hill, the constable discovered the dead body of Durie the next morning, naked, except for a garter on the right leg. There were indications that Durie had, fallen to the ground and had struggled in vain to rise, having clawed up the ground with his fingers as he died.
Evidently, he had wandered about the bush throwing off his clothing bit by bit while demented. An examination of the man's swag provided the police with some of his history. He was born in the parish of St, Mary's, Liverpool, England, in 1894. While working as a dock labourer at Liverpool, Durie, a well-built, fresh complexioned man, enlisted. He made out his will before leaving for the front, a copy of the document being found among In his belongings. The will bequeathed all his belongings to his mother, who was living at 141 Beaufort-street, Liverpool. Letters found in the swag, and which he had recently received from his mother, showed that she Is still at that address, He has. no relatives in Australia.
About two months ago Durie arrived in Western Australia from Queensland, where he had been working in the Mt Isa-Cloncurry district on railway construction. works. He went to Bunbury on his arrival in this State. It was learned at the Meekatharra branch of the Commonwealth Savings Bank that Durie, a stranger to the district, had drawn on his account as recently as August but of his passbook there was no sign. It is thought that he had flung it away with portion of his clothing during his aimless trek. A letter was also in his swag containing the approval of the Lands' Department to Durie's application for a selection in the Bridgetown district. An Inquest will be held.

The death occurred at Gabanintha on Friday. last of Joseph Charles Dyer, who has been resident there for many years, one time prospector, but more recently as station hand on Hill View station. The deceased had been ailing, for some time and on the morning of his death, W. Keane, prospector, who lives at the same camp, gave him a cup of tea and left him in bed. Evidently the deceased got up and dressed himself, for returning at camp he was found fully dressed.
He bad evidently fallen forward an struck his forehead against a camp oven and was partly in the embers of a fire when found at noon by Mr. Keane. He was dead, but his body was still warm. The waiter was reported to the police and Constable Whitney arrived at Gabanintha at 3.30 and made all necessary enquiries. A postmortem examination was made by Dr. Walsh, and an inquest was held and a verdict returned of death from natural causes. The deceased left a will and a brother living at Cottesloe was left executor.

MINING FATALITY - Fall of Stone at Ingliston Consols Mine:

On Monday evening, while at work in the south stope on the No. 12 level, John Farrelly was struck by a fall of stone, death being almost instantaneous. He received a fractured skull and two compound fractures of the left arm. He was working alone at the time of the tragic occurrence, and his death came as a shock to his many friends. The deceased, who had resided at Meekatharra for some years, was a member of the committee of the Funeral and Accident Fund and was always willing to lend a helping band. He was 56 years of age and a native of Ireland. The deceased leaves a widow and five children to mourn their loss. The funeral took place on Wednesday, a large number of workmates and friends following the remains to the Catholic portion of the Meekatharra cemetery. Arrangements were carried out by P. Campbell and Co.

The well-known prospector, John Foley, better known as " Jack the Rager" died in the Meekatharra Hospital on Sunday of last week from heart failure. Foley, who was one of the oldest prospectors on the Murchison came to Cue Hospital for treatment a couple of weeks ago, but like most men of his class, could not stay away from camp, and he returned to Meekatharra only a few days before he died. The deceased was about 82 years of age and a well-known character throughout the Murchison fields. Foley was one of the first to migrate to Victoria, when the first rush broke out, and, migrating from America, he found himself at Forrest Gully, near Castlemaine. Later on he went to Queensland, and from there travelled overland to West Australia. Nothing is known of the whereabouts of the deceased’s relatives.

MR. T. FRICKER.
The death occurred on Saturday at 3.30 a.m. at the local hospital of Mr Thomas Fricker, who had been an inmate of the institution mentioned for about a fortnight. The cause of death being pneumonia. Everything possible was done for him by Matron Robertson and her first-class nursing staff, while Dr. Craig paid great attention to the patient, but despite these facts his condition gradually grew worse and he died at the above-mentioned time.
The late Mr. Fricker was about 47 years of age. He was a widower and leaves a 14-year-old son to mourn his sad loss. Mr. Fricker was a native of Belfast, Ireland. He was a well-known and highly respected resident of this district. The deceased was a member of the A.W.U. and the flag of the union was flown at half-mast at the A.W.U. Hall out of respect to the memory of our departed comrade. Flags were also floating half-mast over the poppet heads of several mines. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, when Rev. A S. Cracknell read the Anglican burial service.

A Sudden Death - FOUND DEAD IN BED.

When the employees of Barton's Cash Supply Store were ready to start work on Thursday morning they were surprised to find the shop doors, closed, and after waiting some time, they sent a boy to the rear of the shop to see if the manager (Mr Fyffe) was still in his bedroom. He returned with the information that the manager was still in bed, but he had failed to awaken him by talking to him through the window.
Fearing that something might be wrong, they sent word to the police station, and when Sergeant Barry arrived on the scene he discovered that Mr. Fyffe was dead, having apparently died in his sleep. Mr, Herbert W. Fyffe was well known in commercial circles in this State, and the present was his second visit to Meekatharra as manager for Mr Barton. Just on three months ago, Mr and Mrs Barton went East for a holiday, and they were returning next Wednesday to Meekatharra, when deceased's engagement would have terminated; and he was looking forward to meeting his family, who reside at Belmont, at the end of the week.
He Was talking to Mr and Mrs Plenderleith, who reside next, door, up to 11 o'clock the previous night, when he appeared to be in his usual stale of health, and it came as a painful surprise to then to learn that he had died so suddenly during the night.
The body was removed to the morgue, where a postmortem examination was conducted by Dr. George; he gave a certificate to the effect that death was due to an attack of acute pneumonia. The deceased was buried on Thursday morning in the Anglican portion of the Meekatharra cemetery.

SUDDEN DEATH - TOM GODDARD PASSES
The sudden death occurred at the Commonwealth Hotel, Meekatharra, last Tuesday of Thomas Henry Goddard (29), a native of England, who had resided here for about two years. From information elicited the deceased attended the circus on Monday evening and later retired to bed apparently in good health. In the morning he complained that he had been vomiting during the night and declined to have breakfast. At 9.30 the doctor was informed and, after examining Goddard, prescribed some medicine for him. He, however, passed away about 11 o'clock. The police and coroner were notified. A postmortem examination was ordered which revealed that death was due to heart failure caused by toxaemia and acute gastroenteritis. The late Mr Goddard, who had been employed on the mines, was a member of the Australian Workers' Union and the flag was flown half-mast at the local office The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, a number of friends following the remains to their last resting place.

PASSING OF HARRY GREEN

The news of the death of Mr. Harry Green, of Cunyu Station, Wiluna, came through on Friday evening last, 31st August. Although Mr. Green had not been in robust health for the past several years, his sudden passing came as a shock to many friends on the Murchison. The late Mr. Green was a well-known identity of these parts, having been in the Wiluna and Meekatharra districts since 1908. In the early stages of his life in these parts, he followed the pastoral industry and did many successful droving trips from the Nor-West to Meekatharra railhead. Later, he joined with his brother-in-law, Mr. W. H. Brown in originating the transport service from Meekatharra to Wiluna during the early years of Wiluna's latest history.
From there he launched out in the pastoral industry, settling on Cunyu sixteen years ago. This place was developed under his guidance to its present productive stage. Mr. Green was born at Lichfield, England in 1894, and arrived in this State when eleven years of age. He died at the homestead of his latest efforts, Cunyu, where he resided with his family, leaving a wife, three sons and one daughter to mourn their loss.
The remains of the late Mr Green were taken to Meekatharra for burial, which took place at the Meekatharra Cemetery on Monday afternoon last, Rev Mr Boulter officiated at the graveside, where a large con-course of friends and relatives assembled to bid farewell to a highly respected and revered citizen.
