The following information has been supplied by Judith Carter. These men enlisted in Meekatharra.

AMIOTT Patrick August No 569, 16th Infantry Battalion. Patrick was born at Cambletown NSW and was the son of William Amiott and Rachael Weal. He spent his childhood at Hill End NSW. By 1899 both his parents were deceased. In 1909 he was at Gin Gin Western Australia and also spent time at Collie before trying his luck gold prospecting at Meekatharra. Travelled by the ‘Ceramic’. He was injured at Popes Hill 2-3rd May. On return to Western Australia he re enrolled for home duties but was discharged as unfit. He died in March 1929 and is buried at Karrakatta Cemetery Perth WA.

ASHTON John (Jack) No 568 Battalion, Lance Corporal. John was born at Hill End NSW. His father was Thomas William ASHTON. He enrolled at Meekatharra on 24 Sept 1914 aged 23yrs and gave his trade as shop hand. He went to Melbourne on the ‘Ceramic’. He left for the front on the “Notoman” on Aug 27 2015. He suffered a gunshot wound on the lower extremities on the 2nd May 1915 and was moved to the Southern General Hospital England on the 20th May 1915. John was admitted to Mudros Hospital on the 1 Oct 1915 with Colitis. He rejoined his unit on the 21st Oct 1915 but was re admitted to hospital one week later on 29 Oct 2015. He died and was buried at Portianos Cemetery on Lemnos Pit 5, Row D, Grave 159.

BARTON Horace Albert, No 570, 16th Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade, Australian Imperial Force. Horace was born in Sydney NSW and enrolled on the 24th Sep 1914 at age 20yrs. His brother Henry Archibald Barton was also at Meekatharra. His mother was in Redfern Sydney NSW. He travelled on the ‘Ceramic’ to Melbourne, embarking on the 22nd Dec 1914. He was killed at Gallipoli on the 2nd May 1915 at popes Hill. He is listed at the Lone Pine Memorial to the Missing.

COWARD Thomas Roy No 572, 16th Battalion. Thomas was born in Ballarat, Vic. He was 18yrs of age when he enlisted on the 21 Sept 1914, and was a labourer. His father was Thomas Richard COWARD of Meekatharra, who gave a letter of consent for his son to join up. On 22 Dec 1914 he embarked at Melbourne VIC on the ‘Ceramic’. He received a gunshot wound to the head on 2nd May 1915 and returned to duty on the 27 May 1915. He was again wounded on the 8th Aug 1915 and then reported killed in action.

GEGGIE William Mark, No 576, Enrolled 24 Sept 1914 at age 28yrs. He was a horse driver from Richmond VIC. His father was John GEGGIE from Vic. He suffered a gunshot wound in the left thigh on the 3rd May 1915. He was admitted to a hospital in Cairo suffering from discharge from an old wound. X rays found several fragments of metal I his thigh. He proceeded to France in Sept 1916. He returned to Australia to live in Perth.

GERHARD Carl, No 432, 16th Battalion. Enrolled 21 Sept 1914, Sergeant, a labourer from Broken Hill NSW aged 21yrs. Mother was listed as Catherine GERHARD from New Norcia WA. He suffered a gunshot wound to the left wrist on 3 May 1915 and was discharged as medically unfit and returned to Australia in Jul 1916.

HEAD Edward, No 434, 16th Battalion, Enrolled 21 Sept 1914. Edward was born in Victoria and came to Western Australia with his father, also Edward Head. He was aged 21yrs and a labourer. He was wounded on the 29 Apr 1915 at Gallipoli. He then proceeded to France where he was injured by an exploding bomb on the 15 Apr 1918 and a gun shot wound on the 9 May 1918.

HOWARD Frank Rodney, No 436, 16th Battalion, Enrolled on 20 Sept 1914. His mother was Emma Howard from Echuca VIC. He was 24yrs old and a baker. He was wounded on the 2nd May 1915, he was promoted to Corporal and then to Sergeant. He was reported killed in action on 2 Sept 1915 at Gallipoli.

WOOLMINGTON William James, No 583, 16th Battalion. Enrolled 24 Sep 1914. He was born in Somerset, England. He was aged 30yrs and was a labourer. He embarked in Melbourne on the ‘Ceramic’ on the 22nd Dec 1914. He received a gunshot wound on 2 May 1915 and was invalided back to Australia in July 1916.
