Maps of the Goldfields > Balgarri about
BALGARRI, Western Australia
AKA the 42 Mile
Balgarri is an abandoned town] in Western Australia 45 km north-northwest of Kalgoorlie. It is between Black Flag and Ora Banda in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. Initially known as Forty Two Mile the town was gazetted as Balgarri in 1898.
Mr J Grant, surveyor, whilst out selecting a water site for the Government came across good alluvial gold in August 1894. A rush soon ensued with the result that a settlement was formed. Messers Moss erected a comodious hotel here and have named it the 42 Mile Hotel.
A considerable amount of uncertantity appears to exist regarding the 42 Mile Rush. Frost was 'on gold' in the district but not at the actual spot where Cashman proclaimed his discovery, and whilst the latter prospector was absent in Coolgardie applying for the reward for the find, George See picked up a 2 oz specimen, thus being the first to find the gold and the reef now bearing the title of 'Brilliant Reward'. Cashman's clain to the discover is consequentially upset.
