Tampa is an abandoned goldfields townsite located 805 km east north east of Perth and about 55 km south of Leonora. Gold was discovered in the Tampa area in the late 1890's, and by 1896 there was enough demand for land for the government to survey a townsite. Following survey the townsite of Tampa was gazetted in 1897. Little is known about the reason why this name was chosen for the townsite, but it may be derived from the city of Tampa in Florida, USA. The nearest townsite to Tampa is Niagara, also an American name. Tampa USA is an Indian name recorded by the Spanish from before 1600, and believed derived from the Indian word itimpi, meaning "near it".
