Bummers Creek - Quatata - Mia Katara > Bummers Creek About
Bummers Creek- Western Australia
AKA Quatata & Mia Katara
Bummers Creek is situated approx 30kms north east of Leonora just off the main Leonora - Laverton Road. Quite hard to find and when you do find it there is virtually nothing to be seen of its former glory.
In January 1897, 600 ounces of alluvial gold was found and Jim Bryan found a 45 ounce nugget in the area
It is reported that Christmas 1897 saw a large race meeting being held at Bummers Creek Race Track - a 14 event card -The track is about 3 quarters of a mile around and 12 yards wide.
It was described as an Oasis in the Desert. The only hotel - the Welcome Hotel - built in 1896 - run by H.C. Hendrickson & Mr Murdoch have spared no trouble to make it a most comfortable place, tastefully furnished with table silver well above that seen in the usual country hotel and all the windows look out on to the racecourse. A very good garden is attached to the hotel with flower and vegetables of all kinds with brushwood verandahs on the garden side keeping it beautifully cool. There are crops of water melons and rock melons with also a good poultry yard. In January 1900 the hotel ran a very successful sports meeting on the Hotel Sports Ground with foot racing and other athletic events raising funds for the Mount Malcolm District Hospital
In 1896 Afghan Salley Mahomed had a vegetable garden at Bummers Creek and in February 1907 the vegetable gardens were being run by an afghan Mahommet Rusools but with very heavy rain falling the Bummers Creek flooded and his gardens were washed away.
